Wild Ideas FAQ

Home > Temple Questions > Spiritual Therianthropy

Do people choose to be therian, or are they born that way?

As with most other "nature vs. nurture" questions, in any community or context, there's considerable controversy over this one. Many therians do believe that their animal affinity is an innate part of who they are, and not something chosen, at least not on a conscious level. And many of those do feel that it is a quality they were born with, and can remember feeling from early childhood.

But there are also some who are wary of essentialist interpretations, and inclined to feel that the potential for therianthropy exists within everyone, whether or not they ever choose to explore or express it.
