The Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) was a large-scale study of the role of Canada's boreal forests in carbon dioxide processing and global climate change, conducted by NASA in the mid 90s. For those too impoverished to subscribe to Conservation Biology (i.e., most people I know), this is a good alternative. An electronic, peer-reviewed, scientific journal - you can subscribe by e-mail to be notified of new issues. It's free of charge while grant money lasts, but may move to a paid subscription structure in the future. It's also broadened its focus more recently, retitling itself Ecology and Society and offering a wider range of articles, but thankfully remains free. The Society for Conservation Biology (SCB)
